Welcome to 2023 – The Year of the AI Revolution

Amassing one million users in just five days, OpenAI’s ChatGPT is officially the fastest growing platform in the history of the internet. We are now at the base of an exponential curve.

The past year has seen incredible advancements in the field of artificial intelligence, with the most notable being the introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT language model in December 2022.

In this article, I take a look back at some of the major AI developments of 2022, introduce ChatGPT – OpenAI’s ground-breaking language model that everyone’s using and abusing right now, and discuss how businesses can leverage AI to drive growth and success in 2023 and beyond.

I also share a few AI tools that I have discovered, that can help you take your work, and play to the next level.

A Look Back at the Biggest AI Advances in 2022

To say that 2022 was a breakthrough year for Artificial Intelligence would be an understatement.

Beyond the cool and funny images our friends and family have been able to create online, 2022 saw major breakthroughs in machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision, three vital branches that make up what we call ‘Artificial Intelligence’.

In January 2022, OpenAI announced DALL-E, a deep-learning image synthesis model that is able to generate images from text prompts. In October, they released DALL-E 2.

Like many AI tools that require text prompts, it takes some time and practice to supply the correct prompts, but once done correctly, the results are astonishing. Here are some of my favourites that we have put together, including the prompts:

In June, Google engineer Blake Lemoine claimed that LaMDA, a language model for dialogue applications, was sentient and deserved human rights, while DeepMind’s AlphaFold made predictions about almost every known protein structure on Earth.

August saw the public release of Stable Diffusion, an open-source, deep learning, text-to-image synthesis model (similar to DALL-E), as well as the controversy surrounding an AI-generated image winning a state fair competition. Artists around the globe are already up in arms over AI-generated art.

In October, Github Copilot changed the way we code forever. Copilot is an artificial intelligence tool that will understand the context of your code and the related files, suggest changes, or even auto-complete entire blocks of code for you.

November brought the news that Meta’s AI agent Cicero, could officially beat humans at the strategy board game Diplomacy, and December saw perhaps the most important release yet – OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Introducing ChatGPT: The AI Language Model Taking the World by Storm

ChatGPT is a large language model chatbot developed by OpenAI based on GPT-3.5. It’s trained to learn and understand the meaning behind questions asked by humans, and can provide human-like responses in conversational dialogue form.

Having played with the model for close to a month now, I can see just how this revolutionary technology has the potential to disrupt the way we interact with computers and retrieve information. It certainly is an immediate competitor to traditional search engine technology, with Microsoft (Bing) already in talks to integrate the language model into its existing search engine in an effort to displace Google search.

What makes ChatGPT so revolutionary, is that it has been trained using reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF), which allows it to understand and fulfil the expectations of humans. This breakthrough approach allows language models to “follow instructions with human feedback” and perform tasks that it wasn’t explicitly trained on.

In addition to its impressive language capabilities, ChatGPT has also been trained on massive amounts of data about code and information from the internet, including sources like Reddit discussions. This has allowed it to learn dialogue and adopt a human-like style of responding.

At Atypically Digital, we have already used ChatGPT to code two WordPress plugins for our clients, requiring little to no input from a developer, helped draft a framework for the rollout of a digital campaign, and provided numerous ideas on just how to approach our next phase of business growth.

To access chatGPT you will need to create an account on the OpenAI website. It will ask you for an email and phone number. Once signed up, head to ChatGPT to get started.

Leveraging AI to Drive Business Growth and Success

As the AI revolution continues to gain momentum, it’s important for businesses, big and small to consider how they can leverage this technology to drive growth and success. AI tools like ChatGPT can help businesses streamline processes, improve efficiency, and make more informed decisions about new or existing markets.

Like many, we have no idea how AI will impact us in the months and years ahead, however, with the sheer volume of data these platforms are collecting every day, we know there is bound to be a massive disruption to nearly every industry.

At Atypically Digital, we’re constantly reviewing our offering to clients and building capacity that enables them to lean into this new AI-first world in order to grow in their respective industries. We believe that by embracing AI, businesses can stay ahead of the curve and position themselves for long-term success.
